Joining the buzz at Kelvin Valley Honey

The term “Good things come in small packages” comes to mind when thinking of Kelvin Valley Honey. Looking at the successes and achievements this Social Enterprise has achieved in relation to its size is a feat in and of itself. KVH was formed in 2011 with goal of conservation and education, while providing employment to the community of Kilsyth. It has come to increase the honey bee population in Scotland to over 30 million, and employing over 50 disadvantaged individuals in the community in the process.

I have learned about honey bees and their process which is so pertinent to our livelihood on earth. Honey bees are hard workers, and “worker bees” spend the entirety of their lives with the goal of producing honey through the collection of pollen, nectar, and propolis on their various flights.

I would say the people who work at Kelvin Valley Honey take on the same philosophy as their hives: work hard and work harder. I am surrounded with a team of motivated individuals on the go, buzzing in their various directions, always with a smile on their face (and the offering of a cup of tea). It’s an unconventional work environment where quite a few things are happening at once, with the ultimate and unanimous goal of achieving big things.

Ultimately, after my short time with Kelvin Valley Honey so far, I have come to realize that achievement and success doesn’t have any correlation with size and capacity. A team of primarily three, has effectively transformed the mindset of an entire community, and is on the road to achieving exponentially more.

I am excited to learn more from my teammates (coworkers and honeybees alike) and experience the ongoing feats this impressive organization continues to achieve!
